As Easter approaches, we like to start getting our ‘Ostereierbaum’ (or Easter Egg Tree) ready!
Materials: branches, acrylic paint, paint-brush, feathers, yarn and/or ribbon, painted eggs (vase, pebbles, beads, pom-poms, wire)
Go outside and find some interesting big branches to make your Easter tree. These could be bare ones left over from winter, or early sprouting ones like pussy willow, magnolia or cherry blossom.
• Then let’s spruce up these branches a little! Why not paint them with your acrylic paints – in stripes or dots? Or paint whole branches in rainbow colours?! Do this carefully on newspaper and leave it to dry completely.
• You could also wrap your branches with yarns and ribbons. Wind them tightly round and tie them up at the end. You can switch colours and textures of yarn and ribbon to create a striped effect, or even string on beads!
• With yarn or wire, tie some coloured feathers to the ends of your branches, the more the merrier!
• Arrange your branches in a vase (if they are still alive, be sure to add water), and secure them with pebbles in the bottom of the vase.
• Now hang your eggs! It can be tricky to add thread or ribbon to an egg for hanging, so you might like to ask an adult to help you. One option is to use a needle to thread some string through the top of the egg, going in gently one side and coming out the other, then tying the thread into a loop. You could also attach ribbon or yarn with a glue gun to the top of your egg.
• Once you have filled your tree with hanging eggs (alternatively, you could create eggs from cardboard, then paint and hang them!), you can see if you want to add anything else..?! Maybe some pom-poms or strings of beads, possibly some flowers or chocolate..?! Anything spring-like goes!
