Art Project Inspired by Edgerton
Have a look at some of Edgerton’s mesmerising photos, especially those of golfers, tennis players and gymnasts. They will all inspire us to create our own sportsperson in action!
Carefully draw and cut out a “person” template, and attach the sections together with split pins.
Choose the sport you would like to depict, and think about the stages involved in the movement – for example, a tennis player beginning to serve will start with the racket high in the sky about to hit a ball in mid-air, and the racket will slowly move down as he or she hits the ball.
Place your “person” on a piece of paper in the first position you want to depict and trace around it in pencil. Then choose a colour from your oil pastels and follow over the lines again. Move your figure slightly to the next “frozen” movement of their action, and repeat. Each time you draw a new person use a different colour to trace around the contour.
TIPS – Try to depict the movement in, at most, 4 or 5 “frozen shots” – or else it can get too confusing. Also, realise that the hips (or central area of the body) may not be moving at all.
