It is Children’s Mental Health Week in the UK this week (6- 12 feb), and this year the focus is on connection.
Even more than ever the importance of our children’s mental wellbeing is of upmost importance, with a day not passing where articles aren’t written about the ongoing effects of the pandemic on young people, the seriously detrimental effects of social media and screens, anxiety about climate change, pressure from increasingly exam-based education and so on and so on…
Art – no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply to observe and enjoy the work of others – is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many. However, the particular benefits of artistic expression for children go far further than relaxation and enjoyment. It is a way to express emotions without words, to process complex feelings and (sometimes) to find relief. Turning to art when you can’t find the words, being able to demonstrate how you feel rather than trying to explain it, can be very, very helpful indeed.
We have released three art projects to help foster connection through creativity. ‘My Helping Hand’, ‘Storytelling’ and ‘My Feelings Box’. Click below to download the free projects.
